Meeting on Saturday to Plan Lord's Celebration

The public is invited to a meeting on Saturday to plan an event to celebrate the impact of Lord's Department Store on the town of Medfield.

The public is invited to a meeting on Saturday, Jan. 12, at which community members will plan a commemorative event to mark the closing of Lord's Department Store.

Lord's will close on Feb. 28 after 73 years in downtown Medfield.

The meeting will take place at the Medfield Historical Society, 6 Pleasant Street, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Preliminary plans include an electronic scrapbook and a time capsule.

Organizer Nancy Norris said, "There is a growing number of Medfield residents who are interested in preserving the role of Lord's Department Store in the history and culture of the Town by inviting people to submit entries to a paper and an electronic scrap book to be presented to the Kelly family with a copy to be kept by the Historical Society, allowing people to record verbal histories and by creating a time capsule containing a list of the things that could be purchased, events that have taken place, and connections made by the town's residents because of Lords. These will be delivered at a culminating celebration to take place at Lord's before the end of February."

In preparation of the celebration, people are asked to share their memories, impressions and stories about Lords at the  by email to MedfieldRemembersLords@yahoo.com, or by mailing cards, letters, or stories to Medfield Remembers Lords c/o Nancy Norris, 11 Causeway St., Medfield MA 020252, and be sure to invite everyone you know to do the same.

I wonder if the Kelly family has considered donating the Lords sign to the Zullo gallery as a permanent fixture....It could sit atop the wall overlooking Main St. just a few feet away from where it has been all these years!

Another idea for the Lord's neon sign that was suggested to me (not my idea, but it is a good one) would be if the new owners would consider calling that retail space "Lord's Place" or Lord's Plaza" and keep the sign there, and list the names of the retail businesses underneath!

The Lord's sign is to Medfield as the CITCO sign is to Boston. I would like to see the Town adopt it (with the Kelly family's blessing), similar to the way the Town maintains the Town Clock that sits atop First Parish. A friend of mine said to me that when her family's been away, and they drive into town, when they see the Lord's sign, they know they are home. The sign symbolizes a lot of what makes Medfield the special community that it is. I'm not sure legally how it would work as far as placement of the sign goes, but I really would like to see the sign stay lit and maintained somewhere in the center of Town. Any ideas or thoughts?
