Market Basket Workers Plan Largest Rally Yet for Friday

Market Basket board of directors set to meet at 9 a.m. Friday in Boston.

By Liz Taurasi

One week to the day Market Basket workers banded together in a show of support for ousted CEO Arthur T. Demoulas, employees are planning their biggest rally yet.

On Friday morning, Market Basket employees plan to rally once again at the same location where they gathered on Monday -- the Tewksbury store at 10 Main St.

The group "We Are Market Basket" says they will continue to boycott and rally until the supermarket chain's board of directors reinstates Arthur T.

The board was scheduled to meet on Friday at 4 p.m. in Boston, but on Thursday afternoon changed the meeting time to 9 a.m.

"Our fight has been joined by tens of thousands. Associates, vendors, media, politicians and most importantly, our customers," the group says on its "Save Market Basket" Facebook page. "We call on our customers to join us Friday and make this rally yours. Your participation in supporting us by boycotting Market Basket until this is seen through is the single most powerful weapon we have. We ask that you continue to shop elsewhere and let your voices be heard both at the rally and in ASDs wallet!"

Arthur T. issued a statement Wednesday saying he and other members of his side of the family want to buy the chain and made an offer to purchase the other 50.5 percent share of the company.

On Wednesday, Arthur T. spoke publicly for the first time about the show of support, calling Market Basket employees “fiercely loyal” and urging the company’s board to reinstate those who lost their job over the weekend.

Market Basket locations within the 71-store chain have been void of perishable products for nearly a week now after deliveries to stores stopped last Friday. Customers and local elected officials have joined in the boycott of the stores in support of its employees.
