Incoming Italian Restaurant Gets Liquor License

A new Italian restaurant coming to town was granted a liquor license by the Burlington Board of Selectmen during last week's meeting.

The license was granted to Tuscan Kitchen which is setting up shop at 24 New England Executive Park.

This will be the second Tuscan Kitchen location and the first in Massachusetts. The original location is in Salem, New Hampshire.

According to their web site, the restaurant styles itself after the "beautiful Tuscan countryside." The restaurant features traditional Italian food made with fresh and authentic ingredients.

Attorney Mark Vaughn of Riemer & Braunstein, the attorney for the restaurant, said Tuscan Kitchen will convert a 9,000 square foot office space into a full service restaurant. There will also be a 4,800 square foot "bump out" addition for a patio dining room.

Selectmen raised few concerns after obtaining from the management that the staff will be properly certified to sell alcohol and that the restaurant will abide by the town bylaw stating that drink service can only be provided in conjunction with food service. All agreed this would not be a traditional bar but that the alcohol sales will be part of an overall dining experience.

Selectman Daniel Grattan did have a couple of questions about the floor plan. On it there was the main restaurant space where alcohol will be served but there are also two sections where the restaurant does not plan to have alcohol sales.

Director of Operations Ed Payne explained that those two sections are being set aside for a cafe and a food shop. The cafe will serve coffee and baked goods, he said. The shop will sell authentic ingredients, popular items and other Italian goods.

The restaurant is expected to open in the spring of 2014.
