Volunteers came out in force last weekend to help make improvements in a popular outdoor destination in town.
According to a notice from the Friends of the Burlington Landlocked Forest, sixty-eight volunteers from Burlington and seven other towns came together on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (June 28, 29, 30) to build a new trail and a 292 foot boardwalk across the wetlands on the eastern side of the Burlington Landlocked Forest.
Using a grant of $6,000 from the state of Massachusetts, the Boston area chapter of the New England Mountain Biking Association (NEMBA) and the Friends of the Burlington Landlocked Forest bought more than a ton of lumber for the project.
"Up until last weekend, crossing the widest area of the forest wetlands next to Route 3 was difficult and dangerous, with make-shift trails that degraded the wetlands area," the release states. "The new, environmentally-friendly boardwalk moves the whole east side trail network away from the noise of the highway and preserves the wetland area. Also, a big thank you to the 67 Burlington and other area residents who generously donated more than $2,200 to help defray the projects’ other costs."
