The Results Are In: Al Fay Is Burlington's Unofficial Mayor

We've counted the ballots and comments and Al Fay has been won the election!

The results are in and counted and Al Fay has been elected Burlington's Unofficial Mayor!

According to the results of our poll, Fay garnered a staggering 2154, or 59 percent, of the votes cast.

Jack Ferren also had a very strong showing, gathering a total of 1,179 votes, 32 percent of all electorate.

Congratulations to Mr. Fay and Mr. Ferren and all of the candidates for being nominated for our Unofficial Mayor race. The purpose of this race was to acknowledge those who make a difference and we've been happy to see how many people both contribute to the town and how many of their fellow residents honor their works.

Mr. Fay is a very well-known and involved member of the Burlington community. Among other things he leads the organization of Burlington Truck Day, has supported the Grandview Farm restoration project and is a member of the Burlington Housing Authority.

Mr. Ferren, our second-place finisher, is involved in many organizations, groups and events in town. He is a 31-year volunteer of the Burlington Recreation Committee, has been the emcee for the movies and concerts on the Commons, the Annual Tree Lighting, DARE graduations and Truck Day. Jack helped with fundraising for the "Sunrise Trail," the town's recreation facility for people of all ages and abilities. He has also won many awards and honors for his work, including the 1995 Exemplary Service Award - Burlington Recreation Commission.

Along with casting their votes, we asked readers to endorse their candidate of choice in the comments section on the article. The endorsements were great and demonstrated why our nominees were put forward in the first place.

Here are some of the comments in endorsement of our winner:

Tom Killilea said:

"Al Fay has dedicated a great deal to this town. Even though he is no longer an elected official he still coordinates Truck Day and has joined the Board of Directors of the Burlington Community Scholarship Foundation."

Sean Killilea added:

"Al Fay all the way. Great man and outstanding citizen."

Lauren simply said:

"Good 'ol Al!!!"

Now we'll be getting in touch with Mr. Fay to let him know he won and we will be setting up an award ceremony. Check back shortly for the details. In the meantime, share your thoughts on the campaign in the comments below.
