Ikier Wellness Center Gets You Moving, Staying Healthy

The Ikier Wellness Center, located at 101 Cambridge St., Suite 390, offers a variety of fitness programs and massage therapies to help people overcoming an injury recover.

The offers energizing massage and strengthening exercise.

More and more people are becoming aware of the value of exercise and massage and how it affects their body and development. Massage is great for alleviating stress, balancing energy and to relax and rejuvenate the body. Exercise strengthens the muscles and aids in achieving greater mobility.

“People just did what they were supposed to do, years ago,” says Beverly Ikier, LMT, founder of the Ikier Wellness Center. They worked, raised a family and took care of their homes but exercise was not incorporated into their lifestyles other than walking and going about their daily activities.

At the Ikier Wellness Center, located at 101 Cambridge St., Suite 390, classes are geared to a special population: the postpartum woman, the older person, people with osteoporosis and people with special muscle conditions— frozen shoulder, for example. Seniors get advice from their doctors to keep moving and Ikier is good at getting people to move.

One wall of the exercise room at the Ikier Center is lined with weights. It’s weight training that slowly increases bone density and is excellent for the person with osteoporosis.

Osteofitness classes are offered by Ikier at 2 locations:  The First Baptist Church in Lexington –Tuesdays and Fridays- 9:15 am to 10:15 am and at the Ikier Center- Mondays and Thursdays – 11:00 am to 12:00 pm and 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Check website for more information- www.theikiercenter.com.

There are roadblocks to fitness for the older person says Ikier; fatigue, limited mobility and pain are some of the issues that keep seniors from attending classes. Exercise needs to be a part of life to provide “renewed energy and an active life.”

Ikier started her career as a registered nurse in Canada specializing in the neurosciences. When her children were young she became exercise instructor. This was a convenient occupation for her at the time and close to home. Ikier became certified by the YMCA in strength training and fitness. She went on to get her advanced certificate in muscular therapy at the Institute in Cambridge. She specializes in massage therapy and corrective body work. For 15 years Ikier has been practicing massage therapy and designs customized programs for her clients paying attention to their specific needs.

On the walls of the Ikier Wellness Center are artist’s renditions of the bones and muscles along with the technical drawings. An artist’s expression of the head, skeletal form or muscles is something that clients can relate to more than a technical diagram says Ikier. There is also photography displayed, some of it done by Ikier’s clients.

The Ikier Wellness Center is a combination of exercise and massage therapy geared to the wellness and increased mobility of the individual. Ikier focuses on posture, balance and fall prevention.
