Defending Champs Ready for Semifinal Showdown
Burlington High School boys hockey, the school's only remaining playoff team, takes on Middlesex League foe Melrose in the North Division 1 semifinal on Thursday.
The quest for a repeat lives on.
Despite some tense moments on Sunday, the Burlington High School boys hockey team toppled Woburn, 3-2, at Chelmsford Forum in the North Division 1 quarterfinal.
As a result the Red Devils, seeking their second straight state title, will take on Middlesex League opponent Melrose on Thursday at 8:10 p.m. inside the same forum.
The winner of that game will take on Winchester or Waltham in the North Division 1 title game, slated for Monday, March 11, inside Tsongas Arena.
During the regular season, Melrose defeated Burlington, 2-1, and the two teams tied, 4-4. The Red Raiders earned their spot in the game by stunning top-seeded Chelmsford on the Lions' home ice.
The team that survives the gauntlet that is the final four of Division 1 hockey will earn a berth in the state championship game at TD Garden on March 17.
