A Farmer's Market to Open in Burlington

Opening day for the new Burlington Farmers' Market is Friday July 15

Thanks to the efforts of a resident and current college student Burlington will soon have a farmers market.

Opening day for the new Burlington Farmers’ Market is Friday July 15 and will run from 3 to 7 p.m. at the , 6 Lexington St. The Market will run Fridays until September 2. Local vendors represented at the Market sell fresh, quality food right in the middle of town. The Market will support local farms and businesses by featuring produce from our neighbors in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, breads and baked goods from Watertown, and fine chocolates made right in Burlington.

The market was founded by Burlington resident Rachel Dutton, a graduate of Burlington High's class of 2007 and a current environmental science major at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She is working with Ben Masi, assistant market manager, and Catherine Dutton, editor for graphic designs.

Dutton said that while studying regional planning and design last semester, she analyzed past development and future possibilities in her hometown of Burlington. She realized that the town would be a great location for a start-up market to provide fresh produce, support and highlight local businesses, and make purchasing food a community event.

"I'm really interested in the local food movement and I wanted to bring that to Burlington," she said. "When people purchase locally they support farms and producers in their community and have a chance to know where their food comes from."

Dutton said purchasing food locally is also better for the environment because it takes less fuel to transport it. Also, since the food is local, most of it will be quite fresh.

"A lot of the produce will be very fresh, nothing like what you get in supermarkets," she said. "Most will be picked that day or the day before. Breads are baked that day. You can taste the difference."

Vendors at the Burlington Market will include produce from Lanni Orchards, Monadnock Berries, and Pastor Blacksmith Farm; breads and baked goods from Big Sky Bakery; and homemade chocolates from Fine Chokolader. More vendors are pending for opening day.

Dutton said she is hopeful the market will attract customers and said so far the response to the plan has been positive.

"People are excited," she said. "Bring your family, friends and neighbors. One of the benefits of a farmers market is the experience. It's a great way to socialize with your neighbors and meet the local farmers and producers."
