Today is Friday, Nov. 11. Here are 5 things you need to know:

  • Isolated morning showers: For the most part today looks like it will be pretty nice, but there is a chance of isolated showers before 9 a.m. today, according to the National Weather Service. It will gradually become mostly sunny today with a high near 51 degrees. Partly cloudy tonight with a low around 31.
  • Closings: All town offices, government buildings and schools are closed today.
  • History of Veterans Day: The date of Veterans Day stems from the implementation of the armistice, outlined in the Treaty of Versailles signed by Germany and the Allied Powers, that ended World War 1 on November 11, 1918. In 1919 President Woodrow Wilson officially made Nov. 11 "Armistice Day" to commemorate the end of the conflict. On June 1, 1954, Congress, at the recommendation of President Dwight Eisenhower, amended the act to replace "Armistice" with "Veterans" to honor veterans of all conflicts in which U.S. soldiers were deployed.
