5 Things You Need to Know Today, June 14

Happy Flag Day!

Five Things You Need to Know Today" is a Patch column that provides readers with essential, daily information at a glance.

Today is Thursday, June 14. Here are 5 things you need to know:

  • Return of the sun: Looks like we're in for a nicer day today. According to the National Weather Service we can expect mostly sunny skies with a high near 73 degrees. Mostly clear tonight with a low around 51.
  • Public meetings: The Board of Library Trustees is meeting at the Burlington Public Library at 7 p.m. this evening. The Conservation Commission is meeting at 7 p.m. in the main hearing room at Town Hall
  • Bridge: The Burlington Public Library is hosting two bridge playing events today. The first is COA Bridge Players, a group aimed at seniors, which will meet at 10 a.m. The second is the Thursday Night Bridge group, which meets at 6:30 p.m. Both sessions are open to the public, so come down, play some bridge and meet new people.
  • Toastmasters: There is a session of the "Last Word Toastmasters Club" at 6:30 p.m. tonight at the Burlington Public Library. This Toastmasters Club is an international organization dedicated to helping members improve their communication and leadership skills. Come join the fun-filled, stress-free, supportive group. Walk-ins are always welcome.
  • Silver and Gold: Ah, one of our favorite songs from the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer special. On this day in 1909, the man who sang that song—Burl Ives—was born. Before he was known as Sam the Snowman, Ives had a long career in folk music, as well as on Broadway and in film. But it's his role as Sam, and the songs Silver and Gold and Holly Jolly Christmas, that will stand the test of time for Ives, as youngsters continue to enjoy the 1964 television classic today.
