- Carrying a torch: On this day in 1896, the first modern Olympic Games are held in Athens. The tradition began in Ancient Greece, but was banned by a Roman emperor. After 1,500, the games were reborn and saw athletes from 13 nations compete in the international games. There were reportedly 60,000 spectators for the games. The first recorded Olympic Games were held in 776 B.C. and then every four years during a festival honoring the Greek god Zeus.
